Winter Sports Recap

The boys middle school basketball team went 6-2 on the year led by 8th Grader Gideon Woods' 11.8 points per game. Woods scored in double figures in every game but one, including a 16-point performance against the undefeated Country School team in Maryland. The team had balanced scoring with 6 players averaging 4 or more points per game. As is this case with CoVid, the team overcame illnesses, quarantines, and injuries along with the loss of last year's 3 leading scorers. Through the last three seasons the middle school team has a record of 17-4 under Coach Chris Countryman. 

Individual Accolades/Stats: Seth Mifflin 15 Point Game.  Gabe Jonas (first year player) 14 point game.  Emery Messick (first year player) 11 Point Game. Gideon Woods, 11.8 points per game. 

 

The girls had an awesome season, thanks in part to a very strong 8th grade class. They went 7-1 on the year, including finishing the season on a 7-game winning streak. 8th Graders Eve Bohinski & Riley Barto led the team with Eve averaging a near-triple-double with 13.2 points, 12.7 rebounds, & 9.1 steals, along with 1.1 blocks while shooting a blistering 52%. Barto cashed in 10.1 points, 2.6 assists, & 3.2 steals. 8th Grader Izzy Stubbs added 3.5 points & 4 steals per game, while newcomer 6th Grader Lydia Hudson pulled down 7.5 rebounds per game. The team had a winning season with their hard work/hustle, tenacious defense, & athletic play in the open floor. 

 

Eve Bohinski scored in double figures in every game but one, and had at least a double-double in every game, with 5 games resulting in a triple-double. Riley Barto and Bohinski each had a 20-plus point game on the season. 

The Lady Royals, ESIAC regular season and tournament winners, rode a stingy defense, scoring from Sierra Troyer and Ainsley Bell, and ball handling of Kaela Mitchell to a first round bye in the DIAA State Championship Tournament. The team finished with a record of 15-5, good enough to earn the 7th seed in the state tournament before eventually falling in the second round to Cape at home.  “All season long we challenged ourselves to keep our composure. At times, we were down starters and have developed our bench to be able to give us spare minutes. We deliberately scheduled a tough non-conference schedule to prepare for tournament play,” Coach Jedidiah Roach.

Junior, Dontarius Jones helped drive the offensive assault on teams this year while junior point guard Gabe Herling created many scoring opportunities throughout the season. At 6’ 6”, Carter Breasure helped protect the rim with eight rebounds and four blocks per game while seniors Brayden Stonebraker, Jeremiah Hannah, and Lou Fluerima cleaned up in the perimeter all season. The team finished the season at 15-6, earning the #15 seed in the DIAA State Championship Tournament, losing to St. Andrews in the first round. “I’m so proud of this group, I’ve never had a team improve as much as they did,” Coach Micah Twedell.

Carter Breasure, Triple Double (26 points, 10 rebounds, 10 blocks against The Salisbury School)

With a team of eleven swimmers between boys and girls, the swim team struggled to team meets. But, throughout the season the swimmers improved and continually beat their personal bests. The relay team of Dawson, Desiderio, Obertubbesing, Woodard barely missed out on state qualifying this year placing just outside the top 18 teams in the state. - Keelie and Coleman never lost a race until states. “Our training season was riddled with snow days and school excused absences but even with only swimming 2/3rds of the season, we still had every swimmer get lifetime best times,” Coach Robert Leszczynski. 

A special thanks to senior, Zach Desiderio on four years of swimming for the Royals! 

Keelie advanced to the "B" Final in the 500 Yard Freestyle.  She finished with the 15th fastest time after dropping a little over 8 seconds off of her qualifying time.  She also swam the 100 Yard Butterfly and finished 18th (second alternate for the "B" Finals) dropping over 2 seconds off her qualifying time in the event.

Coleman Woodard finished 8th in the DIAA State Finals in the 100 Breaststroke and was named to the 2021-2022 Delaware High School Swimming Boys Honorable Mention All State Team.

Coach Robert Leszczynski was named Non-Conference Boys Coach of the Year.
