Mary Patterson – Technology Education Teacher (Milton Campus)
HOW DID YOU END UP AT DELMARVA CHRISTIAN?
I feel like I’ve been an educator my whole life. My school growing up did a lot of mentoring and my kindergarten teacher had me teaching the other kids to learn how to read. I started my secondary education at Millersville University before pursuing an interest in the field of journalism brought me back to Delaware. I earned an associate degree in Criminal Justice. Strangely enough all of this lead me to working in the hotel industry. Once my son was enrolled at Eagle’s Nest at the age of three I came on board as a teacher’s aide, then taught pre-k, and substituted in every classroom. When ENCA became a part of the Delmarva Christian school system I became a Royal.
WHY TEACH TECH AT DELMARVA CHRISTIAN?
Every aspect of the lives of young people surrounds technology so part of what I am teaching is the how to use technology properly I always ask, “how can I help these kids learn more about how to safely and responsibly use technology. My goal is to train up as many Christians to populate the technology market, it is one of the hardest markets to find Christians to engage with and work alongside.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LESSON TO TEACH?
Coding. The progression of where code has come at Delmarva Christian Milton Campus in the last several years has been a major, “light bulb” moment for the kids. They have grown tremendously in their skill and ability in learning code like JavaScript at a very basic level. This keeps me on my toes so I can stay ahead of my middle schoolers.
FUN FACT:
Before working in education, I worked in the hotel and restaurant industry for 12 years, I held front desk, waitress, hostess, housekeeper duties, and ended my career in the hotel industry as assistant manager of a small boutique hotel. After starting my career in education, I earned my Master of Education from Liberty University.
