Delmarva Christian Students Learn Fire Safety During Fire Prevention Week

Students at Delmarva Christian School, from the Early Learning Center through eighth grade, participated in a variety of activities during Fire Prevention Week, gaining practical knowledge and skills to help keep themselves and their families safe in an emergency.

On October 6, students in PK2 through first grade welcomed members of the Milton Fire Department to campus. Through hands-on demonstrations and conversations with local firefighters, students learned about the importance of working smoke detectors, establishing a designated family meeting place in the event of a fire, and knowing when and how to call 911.

Students also toured a fire truck and an ambulance, becoming more familiar with emergency vehicles and the first responders who serve their community. They received fire prevention materials to help reinforce these important safety lessons at home.

For DCS, education extends beyond academics to include essential life skills that help students stay safe and prepared. Principal Drew Jensen brings 36 years of firefighting experience, including service as a past chief of the EastonFire Department in Maryland and his current role as an assistant chief with the Millsboro Fire Company.

“We have the opportunity to teach students so many things, including science, math, writing, and the Bible. I also believe it is incredibly important to teach students life skills,” Jensen said. “The skills taught in fire prevention week are vital for safety.”

On October 8, fifth-grade students expanded their understanding of emergency response by attending 9-1-1 Awareness Day at the Sussex County Public Safety Complex headquarters in Georgetown. The event offered a behind-the-scenes look at the people, equipment, and teams involved when an emergency call comes in.

Students watched demonstrations by local fire and rescue teams, paramedics, emergency operations command personnel, and the Delaware State Police and K-9 units. They also practiced CPR on training mannequins, gaining hands-on experience with an important lifesaving skill. The demonstrations helped students see how different emergency response teams work together to protect and serve the community.
Throughout Fire Prevention Week, students across all grade levels participated in a monthly fire drill and submitted entries to a Fire Prevention Poster & Essay Contest sponsored by the Milton Fire Department and the Delaware Volunteer Firemen's Association.

These activities provided age-appropriate, real-world opportunities for students to learn how to prevent fires, recognize emergencies, respond appropriately, and understand the important role of first responders. The experiences reinforced a simple but essential lesson: being prepared can make a difference when an emergency occurs.

Delmarva Christian School serves students from PK2 through 12th grade and is committed to providing excellent Christian education that develops students spiritually, academically, and physically to know and do God's will for their lives.
