Community Helpers Day

Community Helpers Day

“Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” — Fred Rogers

That simple idea came to life in a real way during Community Helpers Day at Delmarva Christian School.
As part of their Community Economics Social Studies unit, first grade students have been learning how different roles work together to support a healthy, functioning community. Instead of stopping at the textbook, they had the opportunity to meet the helpers face-to-face.

Parents stepped into the classroom to share their professions and experiences:
  • Brian Plummer, Firefighter
  • Christina Dayton-Wall, Veterinarian, All Creatures Veterinary Services
  • Rebecca Tappan, Nurse
  • Adam Wall, Plumber
  • Patrick Helmick, U.S. Army National Guard
  • Mike Brent, Helicopter Pilot, Delaware State Police
Each guest offered a glimpse into their daily work and the impact it has on others. Students came prepared with questions and were eager to engage, especially when presenters shared hands-on tools and real-life stories from their fields.

Beyond the excitement, there was a deeper takeaway. Students saw how each role, different as they may be, serves a purpose. They began to understand that communities rely on people using their unique skills and gifts to meet real needs.

For a Christian school, that idea carries even more meaning. It reflects the belief that God equips each person with talents that can be used to serve others and contribute to something greater than themselves.
What stood out most wasn’t just what the students learned it was what they experienced. They didn’t just hear about community helpers. They met them, asked questions, and saw their work up close.

These are the kinds of moments that stick. Real experiences. Real connection. The kind of learning that goes beyond the classroom and leaves a lasting impression.
