Running with Purpose: Girls on the Run Finish Strong at South 5K Celebration

The Girls on the Run team at Delmarva Christian wrapped up their season in unforgettable fashion at the South 5K Celebration held at Delaware Tech’s Owens Campus. After weeks of training, encouragement, and perseverance, the team crossed the finish line not just with smiles—but with their best times of the season.

This end-of-season event brought together participants from across Kent and Sussex County, making the competition both exciting and meaningful. And in the midst of a large and talented field, Delmarva Christian stood out in a big way.

Kayla led the charge, becoming the very first Girls on the Run participant to cross the finish line overall—an incredible accomplishment. Close behind her were Addy and Eliza, who finished just minutes later, further highlighting the strength and determination of this year’s team.

While the results were impressive, what made the day truly special was the journey that led there. These young runners committed themselves throughout the season—pushing through challenges, encouraging one another, and growing in both confidence and character along the way. Their performance at the 5K was simply the visible reward of the unseen work they put in day after day.

The team also benefited from the support of dedicated leaders and volunteers who poured into them all season long. Thank you to parent volunteer and coordinator Kim Sliben for organizing the group. A special recognition also goes to DCS Staff member Ms. Doughty, who consistently went the extra mile, running alongside the girls during practices to offer encouragement and support. She capped off the season by completing the 5K herself, modeling perseverance and commitment every step of the way.

Moments like these are what make programs like Girls on the Run so impactful. It’s about more than just running it’s about building confidence, fostering friendships, and helping young girls realize their strength and potential.

Delmarva Christian couldn’t be more proud of this team. They didn’t just finish a race they finished a season stronger, faster, and more confident than when they started.
