MERR Institute Brings Marine Science to Life

5th grade teacher Josiah Taylor recently welcomed the MERR Institute into our 4th and 5th grade classrooms for an engaging, hands-on learning experience that brought science off the page and into real life.

“The MERR Institute gave our students a powerful opportunity to see science in action. Watching them connect classroom learning to real-world conservation made the experience especially meaningful,” said Josiah Taylor.
The MERR Institute is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of sick and injured marine animals found along local beaches. In addition to their fieldwork, they also lead educational outreach programs designed to help students better understand and appreciate marine ecosystems.

During the visit, students learned about endangered sea turtle species in our region and discussed the many threats marine animals face, including habitat loss, pollution, and human impact on coastal environments. These lessons aligned closely with the 4th and 5th grade March science unit on endangered animals and changing ecosystems, giving students a meaningful opportunity to make real-world connections to classroom learning.

Experiences like this help deepen student understanding by showing how science is actively applied beyond school walls. Students were engaged, curious, and eager to ask questions as they connected what they’ve been studying to the work being done to protect marine life.

A special thank you to the MERR Institute for investing in our students.
